Zone settings

A guide to the TLS, security, performance, caching and network settings you can configure for a Cloudflare-protected domain, and how to change them safely.

Understand the layer being changed

TLS settings affect visitor-to-edge or edge-to-origin encryption; security settings decide when traffic is challenged or blocked; performance settings change protocols or response transformation; caching settings decide reuse and freshness; network settings change addressing and connection compatibility. Diagnose the affected layer before changing it.

Check plan and setting dependencies

A setting may be unavailable because the current Cloudflare plan does not include it, because another setting controls it, or because the zone is not in the required state. Read the setting-specific availability message and resolve that dependency first. Do not substitute a different control merely because it has a similar name.

Prepare one reversible change

Record the exact current value, affected hostname, expected result and rollback value. Check for an overlapping Rule, Worker, origin redirect, cache header or application setting. Change one behaviour at a time and keep an unaffected administration route for TLS, security and network changes.

Test the observable result

Use a fresh browser session plus a command-line HTTP or DNS check where appropriate. Test one matching request and one request that should remain unaffected. Inspect status, redirect destination, certificate, response headers and origin logs rather than relying only on a saved setting.

Recover without compounding the fault

Restore the recorded value first, then allow DNS, browser, edge and origin caches their applicable expiry. Do not change several neighbouring settings while the first result is still propagating. If rollback does not restore service, investigate the independent DNS, certificate, origin and application layers.
